As a French learner,
here is what I am capable of for each level:
- Orally, I understand familiar words such as “please, thank you” and common expressions such as “I am fine, I leave at noon”. I describe my home, my neighborhood, my city and the people I know. I ask questions like “What’s your name? Where are you working?” and answer them.
- In writing, I understand simple sentences like “The museum opens at 9” on posters or in magazines. I write postcards and fill out forms.
- Orally, I understand short stories, instructions, numbers, and changes in verb tenses. I introduce my family and friends. I describe my personal situation, my experience, and my likes and dislikes. I engage in conversations and commercial transactions. I share basic information without giving my opinion.
- In writing, I understand personal letters and familiar texts. I find information in short informative documents and recognize transition words such as “and, then, actually, so”. I pass on basic information, give an answer to requests, speak about myself, and respect the writing rules of politeness.
- Orally, I understand technical information. I define characters, their points of view, and the time and place of a story or conversation. I describe events and explain a movie, a novel, or an exhibition. I express my opinion and justify it. I can handle most situations that people may experience while traveling in a francophone country.
- In writing, I get the structure, the plot, and the main ideas of a text that is not too long in the professional and familiar fields. I write texts and private letters about familiar topics. I explain events and describe my feelings.
- Orally, I understand long debates or arguments about well-known topics, news programs, and movies. I speak about topics I am interested in, give my opinion, defend my ideas, and present the pros and cons of different situations.
- In writing, I understand novels, articles, and reports in which points of view are expressed. I write clear and detailed texts (letters, essays, reports). I make personal comments about a situation and discuss its advantages and disadvantages.
- Orally, I follow conversations, television programs, documentaries, and movies. I make detailed exposés about complex topics, develop ideas, underline some aspects, and conclude in an appropriate manner. My French is current and spontaneous, and I don’t look for my words.
- In writing, I understand technical instructions, specialized articles, and complex texts of any style. I put into writing complex topics in well-structured texts adapted to my recipients.
- Orally, I understand everything regardless of the speed of the speech. I present, describe, discuss, and make argumentation about any topic. I use idioms and effortlessly take part in conversations and debates.
- In writing, I understand texts of any origin, subject, and style. I write complex texts. I sum up and comment on any type of written work.
